Video: The Meaning of “No”

What is mindful sales?

• Listening to understand vs. listening to reply
• Learning to release negative judgements
• Strategizing instead of stressing
• Seeing the glass half-full instead of half-empty
• Being service-oriented instead of selling-oriented

Participants will learn to develop a positive, customer-focused approach

Here’ s a question that people often ask me:

What is mindful sales? Does that mean you can reduce stress when you sell?
Well . . . yes, but it’s so much more. Here are just some of the ways mindfulness helps:

Mindfulness helps you up your game.

Did you know that the National Basketball Association now uses a mindfulness app for all their players? They realized that just as important as physical strength and agility, it’s mental strength and agility that helps players up their game.

Mindfulness helps you stay positive.

The brain has a built-in negativity bias which developed as an ancient survival mechanism. It’s widely reported that the average person thinks 50,000-70,000 thoughts per day, many of which are negative. Imagine being able to pick and choose positive thoughts that support your goals.

Mindfulness helps you focus on your customers’ needs.

It’s said that people talk at an average speed of 150 words per minute, but when they listen, they can process 500 words per minute. Imagine being able to focus on what your clients say, so you can discover how to serve them. As sales great Zig Ziglar had said, “The biggest communication problem is we do not listen to understand. We listen to reply.”

I’d love to hear from you! The basic Mindful Sales Skills program format consists of four one-hour sessions; we meet once a week at your location for three weeks, with a follow-up session approximately four weeks later. I’m happy to customize a program to fit your needs.

Mindful Workplace Study

I implemented mindfulness programs for groups of sales professionals in varying industries.

Participants reported statistically significant differences from pre- to post-program in the ability to:

  • Reduce stress,
  • Recognize and release negative self-talk,
  • Envision positive outcomes,
  • Feel confident,
  • Recognize new opportunities, and
  • Identify sources of motivation.

A majority of participants reported the intention to use the skills learned going forward.

Mindful Sales Skills FAQs

How can mindfulness help boost my sales?

Your thoughts have a tremendous amount of power—and mindfulness helps you become aware of your thoughts. This awareness allows you to clear your mind, so you can focus on your clients; release negative thoughts and choose positive ones that support your goals; release judgments that could interfere with client relations—and much more!

How about sales skills like prospecting, qualifying, discovery, features/benefits, objections, and closing—does the Mindful Sales Skills Program cover these?

The basic Mindful Sales Skills program focuses more on mindset than specific sales skills, although we do spend a good amount of time on mindful listening skills. If your organization wants training on specific sales skills, I can help. I’m happy to customize the program to fit your needs.

What’s your sales background?

I’m a life-long sales professional. (My mom tells me I’ve been “selling” since the time I could talk, since I always refused to take no for an answer.) Both my father and grandfather were professional salesmen, so selling is part of my DNA. In high school I worked part-time as a telemarketer. After college, I sold optical products to wholesalers. I moved on to selling computer products to the U.S. government, then telephone systems to commercial accounts, and finally print and online advertising to businesses.

Can a four-week program really help increase sales?

Yes! In The Mindful Workplace Study that I ran, participants reported statistically significant increases in mindful selling skills from pre-program to post-program. In the program, participants are given accessible tools so they have a full understanding of how to use mindfulness to increase sales. My intent is for people to be inspired to integrate mindfulness into their sales activities. Those who do so realize the greatest benefits. Joy is a teacher who really makes you think in new ways. She led a 3-part class on Mindfulness for Sales Professionals at my office. I was skeptical that I would be able to meditate at all, and I had no idea what mindfulness is or how it might help me, but her clear explanations and examples showed me how useful these techniques can be in my interactions with clients and in other parts of my life. Her books are excellent too. She would make a fabulous keynote speaker at any meeting of sales professionals, and her classes are very worthwhile. I highly recommend Joy.

Joy’s mindful sales training program was great. The time flew by in each of the four sessions. I especially liked her service-oriented approach to selling and the mindful listening exercises she had us do. She also taught my reps a lot of different ways to reduce stress and stay positive. I was so impressed with Joy’s program, that I’m planning on having her back for more training.

Joy’s program got right to the heart of the matter: how to really FOCUS on the customer.  My sales team learned practical techniques to stay focused, positive, and motivated in their day-to-day sales activities. As a bonus, this interactive program was perfect for team-building. Highly recommended!

Joy’s sales seminar was a breath of fresh air. As a solopreneur, I have to sell, and it scared me. Her techniques are laid back and doable for me. I don’t have to have a personality transplant to succeed. I made more sales in the week after her seminar than I had in the previous month.

Joy drove home her messages in many creative ways, with comfortable group interaction activities. We were all enthusiastically engaged in the challenge of mindful listening. We were able to create our own affirmations, leading us to our personal and business goals. Joy’s training is extremely valuable. Our group enthusiastically agreed that it was a privilege to be the recipient of her teachings.

I had the pleasure of taking Joy’s three-day mindfulness training sessions and it was an excellent experience. The sessions were helpful in understanding the importance of meditation, both in business and every day life. Joy passed along tips on different meditation methods which I’ve already started putting to good use! Her friendly and inviting manner helped to make the class very interactive and fun. Highly recommended!
